Hello, I’m Samantha Halingten, a queer, non-binary artist and the face behind HALINGTEN ART. Though I use my first name professionally, folks usually call me Sam!
My love of the arts has been in my life as long as I can remember, with my passion for ceramics beginning at the age of seven at the Shadbolt Centre For The Arts in my home city of Burnaby, BC. After a cross-country move in my teens, I continued my artistic practice at Beal in their BealART program with a focus on ceramics and painting. After a brief attendance at ACAD in 2018, I returned back to London, ON and obtained my guild membership at Clayworx: Ceramic Arts Learning Centre in 2019. I have since been using their community studio space to create and have become one of their artist instructors. The dream is to one day have my very own home studio!
I am interested in art as a means of sparking joy and bringing a focus to the beauty of the natural world. Through illustrative surface design using colourful underglaze on my ceramic works, I bring to life scenes of natures splendour. As an avid gardener, nature-lover, and sensitive soul, my pieces depict moments of vulnerability and emotion through the symbolism of playful rabbits, lovingly homegrown vegetables, and delicate flora. Creating has always been a way I found peace in expressing my big emotions, and I’ve had the pleasure of watching folks share with me their personal memories and feelings when engaging with my work. I am captivated by the connection that nature and its inherent vulnerability facilitates between people, and my work serves as a gentle reminder that there is always joy to be found.
When I’m not in the studio, you can find me in my vegetable garden, taking nature walks, or having a cuddle with my pets!
